white chocolate and cranberry oatmeal cookies

Did you know they changed the oatmeal cookie recipe on the Quaker Oats box?  It’s true!  I make them so often that I recognized the difference right away, less butter AND less sugar.  That’s just not right.  I was making these for a Kyoukai no Shokujikai (OK, really it was just our church potluck), but I hadn’t planned to post the recipe.  “It’s always available on the box,” I told myself.  (more…)

WOW!  How about “everything but the kitchen sink” bars!?  These were loaded with all the good things life has to offer; chocolate, butterscotch, marshmallows, white chocolate, caramel, and pecans (well, those were my unique addition).  Not to mention the butter and brown sugar foundation.  So, the age old question, can you have too much of a good thing? These little treats hit you with four distinct textures and flavors in one little bite.  Sam and Eli helped me choose this recipe to share for the school’s teacher appreciation day.  I thought they’d be fun for the kids to prepare, but not sure if it was an appropriate adult treat.  The result was a very pleasant surprise!  (more…)

homemade samoas

OK, Girl Scout cookies only come around once a year in the states. So come on, how often do you think they come around in Japan?  Extremely rare commodity, I just had my first taste in five years.  Shanita gave me a box of the originals a few weeks ago.  Unfortunately, she gave them to me right in front of two other American friends, so I did what I had to do, I split my loot three ways.  That left me with five precious, perfect samoas.  Shoulda been one for each family member, right?  Wrong.  Naturally, I ate all five.  (Yeah, Andrew was pretty upset when he found the empty box.)  (more…)

chocolate chip oreo cookies

These were fun and yummy.  Were they the most fabulous cookies I’ve ever had?  Not by a long shot.  But the kids liked them, and they genuinely had the flavor of cookies and cream ice cream.  Who’s gonna say no to that?  Next time I would add more of the straight chocolate and a little more Oreo too.  (more…)

new york times chocolate chip cookies!

True perfection.  I made these once before with the Giradelli chips and they just didn’t suit my fancy.  I did not make them big enough before either, big mistake!!  This time I simply chopped my favorite bitter-sweet chocolate bar into the mix and sized them perfectly according to specifications.  (I actually reduced the chocolate to about half of what is called for, I prefer I higher cookie to chocolate ratio.)  Jackpot, they were amazing!  Fabulous!  Slightly gooey in the middle, a chewy ring and then crisp on the outskirts, just as promised.  Loved them.  Next time I’m going to throw in some walnuts as well.  Chocolate and nuts are probably my all-time favorite combo, so now that I’ve been a purist, I’m going to give it a try.  (more…)
